This notebook doodle—drawn at Syracuse University on September 15, 1982—contained the first spark of the character who would become the Happy Guy.
More than four decades later, a desire to bring the Happy Guy back inspired a weekly postcard featuring a new Happy Guy comic to an old friend—and woke the Happy Guy from a very long hibernation, inviting you to follow his ongoing story.
The Happy Guy never speaks, and he never loses his enormous grin. He wanders through history, art, work, leisure, and everyday absurdity with the same sincere, uncomplicated joy. The world changes around him. The Happy Guy remains himself.
The comics are conceived and directed by Paul Eichholtz. Artificial-intelligence tools help render and revise the images under his explicit creative direction. The character, situations, captions, standards, and final choices remain his own, illustrating the blend of technology and personal artistry behind the Happy Guy.
